I have just returned home from a stay at Barnbougle with my partner and I was completely unprepared for what I saw. The course is just breathtaking and I am definetly coming back - as the first three holes were a blur, walking around totally in awe.
The Dinner was wonderful - as the "BB" was cooked to perfection.
The Staff are just great - Roscoe thank you very much for taking the time to chat and ....just taking the time.
Finally how do the words "THANK YOU" encapsulate the wonderment of vision, foresight of planning and the trust to make it happen. It sounds so inadequate for this portrait to the true golf believers.
But...Thank you !
All Tasmanians proudly belong to Barnbougle, via its heritage.
Richard and his Family have given this gift to us and to the World,
I cant wait to get back.

Phil, I agree; a splash of PL Black Queen at the start of anything at Barnbougle is a winner. Important not to overdo it though. Dan, I think what George's game lacks he makes up for with the amount of tweed he works in to his outfits.

As for the article, too much talk of Roscoe for mine, although I always enjoy the 19th hole as much as any on the course at Barnbougle!

While George has talked about Barnbougle as if he is a golfer it is far from the truth. George is a well known fair weather player who only experiances the down wind holes, and then only counts his good shots. His handicap of 32 is a little generous but I guess you have to start somewhere. When he said eagle he really meant a 7 and it would be great if he could break 50 for 9 holes at some point. I love George but gee his golf is shithouse.

I've just arrived back home in Brisbane after 9 glorious days in gorgeous Tasmania, finished off with 3 days playing Barnbougle Dunes with a group of friends and fellow golf addicts from Victoria.
What an awesome experience! Yes - Tasmania itself is amazing, picturesque and fun; and my friends there are absolutely fantastic - but Barnbougle provided an incredible golfing finale to a wonderful break away from work and business.
The staff at Barnbougle are superb. It seems like their singular mission is to ensure that you have a fabulous and memorable experience whilst at Barnbougle. Their service is not just impecable - it's friendly and relaxed. The food and wine are brilliant and extremely satisfying after a day playing among the dunes. Try the Chocolate Mud Cake for desert - two serves were simply not enough...
The course itself is truly mind boggling - not only in the difficulty and intricacy of it's layout but also in the thoughtfulness of it's design and construction and the path it weaves along, between and sometimes over the coastal dunes. Set aside the fact that this is a public course - open for play by anyone - and you'll find yourself marvelling at the beauty of the location and the devlish nature of each hole.
Playing off the (back) Forrester tees all 3 days with an 18 handicap, my 91 last Saturday felt like a major victory. Making Eagle at the Par 5 11th on Friday was perhaps the best hole of golf I've ever played (Driver, 3 Iron to 15 feet). But two shots will keep me coming back to Barnbougle in the future. On Sunday I smashed a 2 Iron into the enormous fairway trap on the sand dune that faces you on the 4th Hole (bugga!) - and recovered with a totally blind sand iron shot from 50 metres to within 10 feet for a 2 put Par. And on Friday I nailed a 15 metre put across the windy slopes on the 14th green for a one put Bogey 6.
But Barnbougle will bite you hard if you mishit shots, as I discovered by losing 3 balls on the first 3 holes I played on Friday! Lessen learned I did my best to keep it on the short stuff for the rest of our rounds, but still lost another 6 balls to the tall Marran grass after that. And I didn't hit the green at the short Par 3 7th in 4 attempts - but enjoyed playing the hole immensely!
All the other players in our group enjoyed and suffered through similar experiences during the 63 holes we played - so much so that dinner conversations were largely filled with tales of awe and woe, luck and amazing shots, well into each evening.
And of course I got some nice shots of the course features along the way for posterity.
I'd like to thank all the staff at the course for providing us with such an amazing experience, and everyone involved in the design, construction and maintenance of the course for the genius of their creation. The only course I've played that is more awe inspiring is Jasper Park Golf Course in Alberta, Canada.
Our group will be back many times in the future, and I will spread the word about the hidden gem on Tasmania's North East coast.

I played Barnbougle in September - the course was stunning despite the howling wind & driving rain. The staff were excellent & I cant wait to come back again with my golfing mates. I might leave it till next summer though so I stand a better chance with the weather & hopefully the new course will be open by then too so we can play 2 different 18 holes.

dear Biz
I was asked when BBD was opened so looked at the website as I cannot find the book on the history of the course - no doubt misplaced like those golf balls. I wonder who has borrowed it!!! what about putting some of the history of the course on the site?

Thanks so much for the update! I'm a great admirer of Coore and Crenshaw, especially the work they've done with Sand Hills and Friars Head in the US. I can't wait to see what they come up with on Lost Farm! And 20 holes? Nice.
